Taidehaaste, tästä lähtee ~~~ Art challenge, here it goes

Päätinpä sitten osallistua keskiaikavaatehaasteeseen, Waattureiden sinettikillan taidehaasteeseen tarkalleen ottaen. Homman nimenä oli löytää aikakauden taiteesta inspiraatiokuva ja tehdä tästä inspiraatiokuvasta kaksi vaatekappaletta, alkaen tänään, 1.4. Kuvittelin tämän olevan ihan helppo homma, mutta eipä ollutkaan!

I decided to participate on a medieval clothes sewing challenge, Waattureiden sinettikillan taidehaaste to be precise (FB-page only in finnish, sorry!). The name of the game is to find an inspirational picture from period artwork -painting, statue, brass carving, you name it- and recreate two clothing items based on that inspirational picture. The challenge starts today, the first of april. I thought this would be a piece of cake, but it turned out it wasn't!

The thought I started out with was to have a smocked frilled veil as the second item of the challenge. Ive been itching to sew one for a long time and put my theory concerning their structure to the test (more about that later). There aren't that many pictures of them, though, and when they are represented, they tend to be combined with a front laced or buttoned cotehardie, on occasion with a sideless surcotte. I have all of those readily made and relatively new, too, so two nearly identical dressed did not sound like a plan to me. So, what then?

No mi-partia!

The fabric for making tippets had been bought a long time ago, but the fabric had not turned all by itself to readily made tippets. So perhaps the combination could be tippets and something else, a dress? All fine and dandy, but tippets too tend to be combined with a cotehardie, and more often than not without the sideless surcotte. Arrgh, what then? The answer is mi-parti!

Tästä piisi sitten lähteä etenemään, tyyliesikuvani tästä etenpäin on Phelice de Vere v. 1327 hautamuistomerkkeineen. Muistomerkki sijaitsee Walesissa, St. Athanissa.

This is my inspirational picture, my style goddess from now on is Phelice de Vere with her funerary effigy from 1327. It's situated in Wales, St. Athan.

Kangas on jo valmiina, joskaan en ole ihan varma tulisiko siitä mekko vai päälimekon puolikas. Sitä on kuitenkin kolme metriä... Kangas on ihan täyttä villaa ja ostettu viime vuonna Saltvikin viikinkimarkkinoilta ruotsalaiselta Svarta Kattenilta. Ja onhan siinä kissankarvoja jo.

The fabric is ready, although I'm not totally sure if it'll be the dress or half of the surcotte. There's plenty of it, three meters... It's 100% wool and bought last summer from the Saltvik Viking market at swedish Svarta katten's market stall. And it's already well covered in cat hair!
